Grow On-Demand Microgreens: The Method Behind Our Madness

So, what does "grow on-demand" microgreens really mean?
Simply put, it’s how we do business. Tasty Little Leaves Microgreens, LLC doesn't have a brick-and-mortar storefront—we are a completely web-based service. Because of this, our service includes cultivating, harvesting, and delivering pesticide-free, nutrient-dense living food directly to you.
(And if we get technical about it, they aren't "chemical-free" because even pure water is a chemical! Plus, I add a clean, mineral-based grow solution to the water to ensure every tiny little leaf is packed to the brim with vitamins and nutrients.)
Seed to Order: Running Lean and Waste-Free
The ultimate goal of any small business is to stay viable, and we do that by running our urban farming operations as lean and waste-free as possible.
The essential elements of an urban farm are simple: seed, grow medium, light, and water. Oh, and time, harvesting tools, packaging, labels... and the most important ingredient of all: your order.
Our process does not begin until an order is finalized on our website. My focus is growing a custom tray of microgreens specifically for you, not for a random nameless person perusing produce at the grocery store. Plus that package of microgreens might just sit, expire, and get thrown away if nobody buys them in time.
The Grocery Store Contrast
Think about those prepackaged containers in the produce section at the grocery store. Those microgreens were likely harvested anywhere from 7 to 10 days ago. I'm not knocking them, but they simply cannot compare to freshness of microgreens grown on-demand. Our microgreens are delivered within 36 hours of a completed grow cycle—and usually within mere hours of harvest. The vibrant flavor and satisfying crispness of fresh microgreens simply have no rival.
Keeping it Sustainable with Silicone
Another way we eliminate waste is by utilizing reusable silicone mesh liners instead of traditional soil as our grow medium.
With soil-based setups, the soil can only be used once, leaving behind a heavy, spent root mat tangled with soil and harvested stem stubs. By using a hydroponic setup the leftovers are a clean root system and the discarded stem stubs. (Oh, and my neighbor’s chickens love those leftovers as treats, and I love the fresh eggs I get in return! Have you seen the price of eggs lately? 🐿️ Squirrel... let's get back on topic!)
While I do some composting in my personal outdoor garden, as an urban farmer, I just don't have the space or time to manage a massive soil-building operation. By scraping the remaining debris off our silicone mesh liners, we can thoroughly clean and sterilize the trays and liners, reusing them cycle after cycle until they finally wear out. Less dirt in the landfill, more efficiency in the grow room.

I have been Dawn’s customer for couple of years. Her microgreens are very tender and delicious. I especially like the purple cabbage. I like them as a standalone salad or added to romaine salads. They are great added to my sandwiches rather than iceberg. And I like that they are so much more nutritious.
They're so versatile! I add them to soo many meals: scrambled eggs, tacos, sandwiches, salads, etc.
I absolutely love your microgreens! 🌱 They’re fresh, delicious, and such an easy way to add nutrition to meals. I use them on salads, sandwiches, wraps, avocado toast, and soups. Thank you for growing such a wonderful product! 💚
These microgreens are exceptional! Every order I’ve received is fresh, tasty and so easy to incorporate into daily food choices. Would highly recommend.
